The first E2-D Advanced Hawkeye has been delivered to the US Navy.

July 30: The first E2-D Advanced Hawkeye was delivered to the US Navy yesterday at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. The Advanced Hawkeye Advanced Warning & Control Systems (AWACS) aircraft can scan a larger area, detect smaller objects and process information faster than the ‘legacy’ E-2 Hawkeye.

Admiral Gary Roughead, chief of Naval operations, accepted the aircraft at a ceremony held on Chambers Field at NAS Norfolk. "It's going to be a game changer with information dominance for the US Navy," he said.

The Advanced Hawkeye will be assigned to Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 120, the ‘Greyhawks’, the US Navy's Fleet Replacement Squadron that trains pilots and flight officers to fly and operate new systems before assignment to an operational fleet squadron.

The first E-2D flew on August 3, 2007 and the pilot production phase for the first three aircraft was awarded in July 2007. The US Navy envisages a requirement of 75 E-2Ds in total.
