C-17 crashes in Alaska

A C-17A Globemaster III crashed near Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson yesterday.
 

July 29: The US Air Force has confirmed that a C-17A Globemaster III crashed near Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson yesterday, with all four crew members presumed killed.

An air force spokesperson told a local newspaper that the aircraft was practicing for the Elmendorf air show planned for this weekend. According to witnesses, the aeroplane crashed in “a huge ball of flame”. The C-17A belonged to Elmendorf's 517th Airlift Squadron from the 3rd Wing.

It is the first C-17A accident to involve crew fatalities since the aircraft entered service in July 1993.
